Sensor Definition
What is a sensor?
A sensor is a device that can detect, sense and measure physical, chemical or biological quantities, and convert them into electrical signals, digital signals or other forms of signals for further analysis, processing and application.
Sensor Categories
Sensors can be classified according to different standards, mainly including measurement parameters, working principles, output signals, etc.
Categories by measurement parameters
1. Temperature sensor types include thermocouples, thermistors (RTD), thermal resistors, semiconductor temperature sensors, and infrared temperature sensors. They are used in ambient temperature monitoring, industrial process control, and medical equipment.
2. Pressure sensors include piezoelectric, strain gauge, capacitive, and resistive. They are used in gas and liquid pressure measurement, automotive engine control, and meteorological monitoring.
3. Humidity sensors include capacitive, impedance, and optical. They are used in environmental humidity monitoring, meteorological instruments, and HVAC systems.
4. Optical sensor types include photodiodes, photoresistors, fiber optic sensors, and optical sensors. They are used in light intensity measurement, spectral analysis, and environmental monitoring.
5. Acceleration sensor types include MEMS accelerometers, capacitive, and piezoelectric. They are used in motion detection, vehicle stability control, and motion tracking technology in smartphones and watches.
6. Magnetic sensor types include Hall sensors, magnetoresistive sensors, and fluxgate sensors. They are used in geomagnetic field measurement, electronic compasses, magnetic field monitoring, and other technologies.
7. Gas sensor types include electrochemical sensors, semiconductor sensors, and infrared gas sensors. They are usually used in air quality monitoring, gas leak detection, environmental protection, and other fields.
8. Displacement sensor types include inductive, optical, capacitive, and laser. They are usually used in position measurement, automatic control, industrial detection, and other aspects.
9. Image sensor categories include CCD (charge-coupled device) and CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor). They are used in cameras, video surveillance, and the now very popular autonomous driving systems.
